Welcome to the CANFAR Workshop Pages
The Workshop
Between May 9th and 13th 2011, the CANFAR project will be hosting a series of 3 day workshops at the CADC designed to introduce astronomy researchers to the CANFAR Cloud Computing and Storage system.
CANFAR is a new infrastructure which will be operated by the CADC and will provide services to Canadian astronomers. CANFAR is designed to provide computational and storage resources required to do large scale astronomy projects and to support distributed collaborations.
- CANFAR storage will provide large scale (multi-terabyte) storage resources
- CANFAR processing will provide a batch system with access to ~500 cores
- CANFAR processing jobs will be run on virtual machines customized by users
These workshops will provide an introduction to the CANFAR tools, processing system and storage system through a mixture of tutorials and hands-on use. If you have a need for large quantities of batch processing and data storage then CANFAR can help you achieve your science goals.
An initial announcement is available here.
Workshop Logisitics
Location: NRC-HIA, 3rd floor conference room, follow the signs from front door. Maps can be found here.
Accommodation: Out of town attendees should stay at Swans Inn in downtown Victoria
Transport: We will attempt to arrange a car pool from the Swans for Wednesday and Thursday.
Basic CANFAR Usage
The workshop will show astronomers how to integrate CANFAR services into their data analysis, including:
- Saving and retrieving data
- Sharing data with collaborators
- Creating and customizing virtual machines
- Submitting large processing jobs (10's or hundreds of cores simultaneously) to the batch cloud processing system
- Monitoring large clouds jobs
During the CANFAR workshop we will walk you through this process so that, at the completion of the workshop, you will have the skills required to make full use of the Cloud computing and storage provided.
If you are interested in attending this workshop please complete an Application and submit it to us.
